External mechanism for authentication?

Subject: External mechanism for authentication?
We're interested in authenticating using certificates.  Does Matrix support the External mechanism?  Or is there another way to implement authentication using certificates?

SASL EXTENAL is currently not supported.
Its also not possible to add it external. Internal source code changes are needed because the certificate must be passed on the SslStream.
