Subject: regarding ags shared source license
Hello everyone,
I'm planning to develop an open source app that will connect to gtalk(Google's jabber based IM) service and retrieve certain information depending upon the user requirements.I also intend to release this under gpl or lgpl.

The problem is that the agsXMPP license doesn't support gpl or lgpl but the license says that i can distribute the agsxmpp source + binary with a compatible shared license though it doesn't say anything about distributing agsxmpp binary only(No source) with open source/non-commercial softwares .

In short I'm talking about the binary license that was mentioned for commercial purposes.I only want to distribute the binaries of agsxmpp along with my app

My app will be completely free and open source and wont provide any type of paid or fee based services or connect to any commercial service.

Hello,

Of course you can use our SDK in non commercial software for free. You don't have to publish your source code. Your software could also be closed source. If your software is Open Source then it must be compatible to the agsXMPP license. And as you mentioned GPL or LGPL is not compatible.

We decided to use the agsXMPP Shared Source licence because we want to prohibit commercial without purchasing a commercial licence which is not possible with GPL or another OSI licence.

Alex,

Before i decide on which license to use ,I need to ask a few questions regarding the license:
1.Is it required to distribute the source of agsXMPP along with the binary with my source. or cant i just distribute agsXMPP' binary without the source(along with my source of course)??
2. Will apache2/bsd licenses be compatible with agsXMPP's shared source license??Could you/somebody suggest an OSI/free/open approved license that is compatible with agsXMPP??

p.s:This licensing thing is killing me . :scared:

Hello,

you can redistribute our binaries without source. Just include our licence.

No the Apache or a BSD like licence is not compatible with our shared source licence. You can distribute your code under one of this licences and exclude the agsXMPP library from it. But i don't think this makes sense when your project relies on our SDK.

I know that it's not easy to find a compatible licence if you want to open your source. We are currently evaluating some other OSI compatible licences and perhaps distribute it under a dual licence in one of the next releases. But this is not for sure yet.

Alex

PS: jabber-net could be licenced under GPL
