Best control for holding contacts

Subject: Best control for holding contacts
Hi! Please i am building an IM application using agsxmpp and i am using the rostercontrol to hold contacts. Its working fine. But i can't find a way to add contacts pictures and status to the roster control.

Please is there a way of doing this or do i have to use another control for this. And if i have to use another control, what control would be recommended?

This depends on what you want to achieve, which functionality you need and which GUI framework you are using (Winforms, WPF, other).
The roster is one of the most important functions in a chat client. The roster control in the MiniClient is only a very basic example. Its based on the Winforms Treeview which is very limited. In the most clients we wrote, we used either commercial controls, custom user controls or a datagrid which also can work very well.

First of all Thanks a lot for the fast and helpful response. I am doing it on winforms. Can i use datagridview or listview? Please which one do you think will be easy and what do you think skype is using for theirs?

I have no idea what Skype is using. In my opinion also Skype is not a good reference. UI wise this software is not very user friendly to me.

As I said before, it hardly depends on the features you are looking for.

  • Groups or flat list
  • Treeview like groups, expand collapse
  • Subgroups
  • sorting
  • search
  • hide offline contacts or others
  • Avatars
  • other icons or actions per users, eg status, tune or mood
  • etc.....
